    • Amazing! Need a hook or something that you can set the triangle control onto which will hold the head and neck in a neutral position that looks good. Then you can take your hands off without it collapsing. Otherwise that will get very heavy to hold over time.

  • Wood bending tip: Instead of a time consuming steam tube setup (which is great for bending 1"x2" material, but overkill for 1/8" material), look at Luthier's bending irons that they use for the sides of acoustic guitars. It's little more than a blowtorch or heat gun pointed into a closed section of pipe. Spray the wood generously with water and rub the intended concave side of the curve side to side over the pipe. The wood will relax and you can shape your curve. Pull it away from the iron, and it will set in seconds as it cools down. Didn't bend enough? Give it another spritz and reheat. This will work best with solid hardwood instead of ply, but it'll be quite strong.

  • Grab some Olsens PG49802 precision blades. Supposed to be more durable as they are hardened. They have a reverse double tooth design that's good for cutting up to 1/8" metals. Also, go slow on the thicker stuff.

  • Build the form. clamp the plywood on one end. Steam where you intend to bend. Move slowly. As you gain more curve, advance, then clamp. Took me three tries for the back of the boat we built.

  • I have used a Scuncii steam cleaner before with a pretty small head to ben 1/4" thick plywood for a Puddle Duck Racer a friend and I built. Surprisingly effective. A second method is using a 5 gallon metal fuel can that has never seen fuel, on a propane burner like you would use for a turkey fryer. The pour spout becomes the steam output spout. It sits quite stable with good capacity. Then just attach a hose to input the steam into your steam box OR use a clear plastic bag. Both work quite well.

  • I started a Dragon on a dare about 3 years ago. I haven't touched it in a year because I was having an issue with the weight. Watching this video has me inspired to pick it back up again! If I ever figure out making videos, I'll share the progress. But first I have to re-sculpt and cast the head. For me, if the sculpt isn't perfect there's no point in working on the body. Thank you for the inspiration!

  • Hello Adam, So the whole time I am watching this I keep going back in my memories to when I used to build and fly Balsa built RC airplanes and gliders. Your Tail structure looks much like that of a wing with several spars. When making a wing you would lay a heat shrinkable material over the spars using a hobby iron. The material has a glue on the inner surface that activates with some heat. One brand of this material is called Monokote if you want to look into it. I was thinking it would have been lighter than what you did and it would have given you complete coverage of the skeletal structure and providing a huge amount of surface area to glue on your skin. The down side would have been once applied the structure would be more rigid. Over course you could just cover certain sections of the skeletal structure leaving some motion to the tail if you wanted. Anyway Just thought I would share the idea.

    Mike MillerMike Miller3 päivää sitten
  • you could fill the tail with helium balloons to make it even lighter???

  • My only suggestion on making a bar that will hold your costume while it sits but doesn't make it hard for you to remove from the said bar, is to implement a pedal lift with a Z pedal that has a switch lock. when you press on the pedal, the bar locks up. which will make the bar longer. when you press the pedal again, the bar goes to the ground giving you about 3-5 inches of height difference.

Often available at 'Habitat for humanity restore.' I happen to put the keg in a fire pit, but a propane weed burner would work as well.
