Adam steps into the massive workshop of Animax Designs, a character design and fabrication company that he's been working with for his velociraptor costume. One of Animax's specialties is the build of fully animatronic dinosaurs, and Adam gets up close with their massive Tyrannosaurus Rex mech that's just about to be animated for the first time.

Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Life-Size Raptor Costume!: fiworld.info/goon/fKbT3I60lZZufo0/videot.html Special thanks to Chuck Fawcett, Jay Rottinghaus, Michael Schupbach, and the rest of the team at Animax Designs for making our visit possible! www.animaxdesigns.com/ instagram.com/animaxdesigns/
Dinosaurs never existed.. Make a video about that.
awesome site! doesn't look too fancy but it really worked :P
dont know if anyone gives a damn but in less than 15 minutes I hacked my girlfriends Instagram account using Instaportal. Cant link here so search for it on google ;)
How much do I have to pay their team to go into their shop for a day and help assist them if I can?
❤️
Stop wearing masks!...
I can't waaaaiit to see this! Oh my gosh!!😜😆
Ooo Ah, that's how it always starts. Later there's the running and the screaming.
I liked the way the guy said suspend belief instead of suspend disbelief.
Wouldn't that be a great place to intern for a mechanical or electrical engineering student? They must do internships, right?
Holy hell, the fluidity of the trex is insane it looks almost fake like cgi it's so smooth I'm so impressed by this what a crazy technology
2:43 no, they don't lol
Camera focus is off on the early interview shots like 5:18. I hate noticing stuff like this.
Why does everyone have a bad sunburn?
this one i like super coollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
They should get together with Boston Dynamics and make one that actually walks.
I’m commenting “Correct”
Farting dinosaurs is something I will think about the next few days...
Just found my first purchase when I win the lottery!
This is amazing

Please tell me you're planning a follow-up video to show what this bad boy looks like when it's finished!
Adam, for wire to bend frequently it has to be stranded. The finer the strands the more it can bend (welder cable). Copper work hardens when bent. Automotive and marine grade cabling must be stranded for this reason because of vibrations.
Why do my eyes keep tearing up throughout this video??
As an animator, I now have a new dream. These rigs must be fun to play with!
@hyperfisk Dino's are definitely fun to work on and yes the limiting you have to build into these mechs is a bit crazy sometimes. Idk if you know how delta motions work with actuators but those are "fun" to work with. Yikes. It's incredibly fun. Imagine animating your traditional way with a life size skinned dino in front of you and being able to update the motions on the fly. And not just some two motion mech, one with over twenty and giving it life. It's incredible. Glad to hear you got to work on some in some fashion.
@Cody Ashworth I can imagine one of the more difficult parts must be all the constraints the rigging gives you. But it looks like so much fun too. Was lucky enough to animate some 3D dinosaurs for a documentary some years ago. Honestly, dinosaurs make the job even more fun any day.
Dewd absolutely! Rigging a mech like this has it's challenges at times since we build it to meet the functions of the actuators in the mech. Animating with actuator based limits has it's challenges but taking those limits and making them look as life like as you can is the goal. If you have any questions I can bombard you with info. Educating in this field is important for other animators out there to broaden their horizons and to know you don't have to shoot for the mainstream view on what a job in our industry looks like. Thanks for the comment! Love the interest.
Does anyone know where this is going to?
Seeing this thing to scale, I have to wonder how it gets sent off to the clients
I know trucks and these characters are only machines. But I've had a favorite truck that just has a "perfect feel" is this the same with these wonderful machines?
I drive trucks..each truck is individual. 2 trucks are never the same. My question is, is each individual character different as well? Lol.. Like a "unique personality"?
Each character is totally unique! Great question. The main difference is we aren't making a million of these things and you can't just test drive it until you like it. We build it the way we know we will like it.
This legitimately reminds me of Reptar from the Rugrats The Movie
Where is this going? Where can it be seen irl?
Watching stuff like this makes me realize how dumb I actually am 😆
animatronic its my pet
you better go back when she has a skin
Dude! Stop making me so jealous. I wanted SO much as a kid to get to see the JP T. Rex animatronic in person...and alas, it was scrapped and the foam rubber skin rotted so I never will. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease can you do a JP T. Rex head using the same techniques ILM did for the first film? Just the head? It's big but....doable!
Also this finalized will totally scratch that itch for you!
I think that was Stan Winston Studios.
TAKE THE MASKS OFF you look stupid
This has to be for velocicoaster at islands of adventure.
That or a Jurassic World re theming for the Jurassic Park ride
I've been to museums. The dinosaur will keep working properly for 20 years. The exhibit will be retired in 50.
Love love love to see these kinds of dinosaur animatronics, I would love to see if Adam could ever talk to the guys who worked on the Walking with dinosaurs stage show and those mobile life sized robots!
I get a feeling this is one of the last industries that still cares about maintainability and long-term use of their product
T. rex would just eat the engineer who suggested planned obsolescence to her
LETS DO THE FORK IN THE GARBAGE DISPOSAL, LETS DO THE FORM IN THE GARBAGE DISPOSAL. 12:26
7:08 - Now mentally add the word "bowel" to this section. No need to thank me.
This Rex is 100% being made for the Jurassic World part of Disney parks! So cool
Universal Parks
Took my kids to Dino Safari yesterday. An amazing experience! Had to wear my Jurassic Park shirt lol. Thanks Adam for giving us these behind the scenes looks at the industry
Seriously, take the f* masks off and get on with your lives. You know you don't have covid and the chance of you or the other guy having it is like 1 in 3000. (CDCs numbers, not mine)
With all the work, technology, and skilled people working, how much does one of these cost? Would be nice if you had included that.
Right On! 👍 Absolutely incredible!!
Adam does a great job of making people feel good about their work.
...STOP with the damn masks, already! Not normal!
man it would suck to be a robot and need this kind of constant maintenance on your body..
As someone who designs machinery for a living, The simple fact that these guys are designing for a 20year lifespan on this machine is absolutely insane. It is exponentially more difficult a task than a 1 shot and done. I bet those electric actuators run over 20k a piece.
I'm amazed at how quiet it is, compared to hydraulic powered animatronics.
this for ark2?
Cool. Hope you'll go back once it's been covered with skin
huh? take the face diapers off.
Adam ask them if it will do "Michigan J. Frog Hello, my baby song" LOL
It kinda reminds me of a Watcher from Horizon Zero Dawn.
Wait, clients? Where can I go and see one of these in action and working, I don't know there was a company that does this, if there is a company there must be robot dinosaurs somewhere and I have to see it!
Reminds me of this thing I saw in Thailand a couple of years ago... fiworld.info/goon/Yp7Dt6Smy2KJepE/videot.html
Seen one of these at the Natural History Museum in London. I don't know if its these guys but it was still amazing and pulled huge crowds.
Adam and the Tested Crew are going back in 4 months right? We HAVE to see this fully skinned!!
I am surprised that using elastic members to counterbalance the loads an actuator must carry is used on something this large. 👍
Is this the Indominus Rex animatronic?
Great people can do great things together. Just Stunning!
Some interesting engineering design choices there. How heavy is your framework?
Watching this all i can think is Grant would have loved this.
So, how long before we can have one just running around in a field, without a computer umbilical cord hanging off?
All should be privileged to work with a guy like Cody... HECK YA BABY😅
That's just cool. Man, do I want to see the finished thing.
That was amazing. Let's come back in 4 months and see the progress.
As a Mechanical Engineer and Jurassic Park fan, watching the fluid motion of this machine is like listening to a symphony! 🎼 Absolutely beautiful!! Is Universal Studios the client for this?? I can't wait to go see it in person when it's finished.
This is how Horizon Zero Dawn happens y’all.
Regardless if I am 15 watching Mythbusters or almost 33 watching Tested, I still find myself saying, "That is so cool!" like a kid when watching Adam get excited about all the awesome stuff he gets to be around, play with and, work with.
Besiede the very interesting Video. Just imagin in 5-10 Years, why are they wearing Mask? At least i hope thats what they think...
That is freaking amazing. Blown away.
WOW. What a show and tell. i had not expected the model to be able to move forward (presumably backwards someday too). I look forward to more video from the Animax Designs world. Keep up your adventures!
So very cool!
Hand on the button is not just for a safety aspect... but also to stop further damage if it was to occur.
What do you do for a living? Make life sized, robotic dinosaurs.
Animator reminds me of Ricky from tralier park boys
well .. they sound like my job: you cannot just program something in a totally shoddy way and hope its never gonna break - the stuff you're creating needs to be accessible for others, too :) so, to me .. totally normal? :D
The flexible electrical cables have a braided copper conductor inside the special Kevlar housing. I’d be surprised if there wasn’t a teflon insulation between the copper and the Kevlar.
IMPOSSIBLE to watch someone I used to admire for his mind propagate this absolute nonsense about masks. And for everyone out there that don't believe they work and STILL wear them... stop being cowards. You're only making it worse.
So impressed with the creation and movement! Very cool to watch!
i'd a good thing i'm not an engineer ... the kind of crazy shit i'd come up with ...
This is so freaking cool. Can't wait to see the whole thing finished!
is this the Jurassic world : The exhibition t rex ?
No, that was done by Creature Technology Co.
Beta
wow
Good boys, all wearing your muzzles. Good boys..
These guys from Animax really know their stuff. The number of problems they are solving for is mind-blowing.
Imagine it just pops off the mount and starts hurling towards them
Need Boston dynamics to get it to dance and do back flips!
OH GAWD Mr. Adam. Take off those STUPID masks !
Nice touch with the Side Mirror intro Adam.
So thrilled to see this content. It's just glorious. :)
Serious Horizon Zero Dawn vibes :)
Imagine getting to play with that every every day!
Astounding. Nice that we get to see this shop of wonders.
please more
I’m trying to ballpark the final cost of this in my head...It’s gotta be at least a million beans, surely, when you include the ‘labour’, so to speak? I’ve no idea what I’m talking about, I should add. 🙂
@Cody Ashworth More than several.
Lots of beans.
You do so much for everyone that can see this.. although we can't work with what you have, you are inspiration
I think this one is going to the new Jurassic parks rollercoaster in universal islands in Orlando. Anyone know for sure?
Yes someone knows for sure
interesting
