Stormtrooper Exploded-View Model Kit Build!

This week's model kit build actually begins as a disassembly, as Norm takes apart a Bandai 1/6 scale Stormtrooper figure to rebuild it as an exploded-view model, revealing the internal structure and kit design alongside its armored shell. It's like an exploded-view diagram in physical form, and a simple modification anyone can do with wire, superglue, and their favorite snap-fit model kit!

  • If this was done to a robot kit would be better I think. It just weird to do that to model of a person.

  • That's pretty cool. Just last year I made a figure with "floating" parts with hidden wires, but only one or two. Now I want to do something like this with my bootleg vintage Saint Seiya figures.

  • This is so cool! Great job Norm:) Since I was a kid, I’ve always been obsessed with cutaway or cross-section and exploded view illustration books. Awesome execution of that effect👍

    • @Richard Wells I never said that none of them died. I said that they didn’t all die. No, it must make more sense that their armor is no better than cloth and they all die every time that they get hit.

    • @jm329 show me stormtroopers IN THE FILMS that shrugged it off. We had troopers dying from GLANCING SHOTS like the one that grazed Leia.

      Richard WellsRichard Wells12 päivää sitten
    • @Richard Wells They didn’t always die. It’s like saying why do we even have body armor now if it doesn’t stop you from dying. “The most obvious function of the armor was protection against weapons fire and battlefield hazards. The armor, and the body glove worn beneath, were designed to disperse the energy of a blaster bolt and insulate the wearer, lessening injury. The body glove provided insulation and cushioning while also regulating body temperature during periods of exertion, and could also act as a compression sleeve to stem bleeding if a stormtrooper was injured. It also provided limited protection against radiation, as the body glove maintained cellular integrity in the presence of a catastrophic reactor leak.[2] Although standard armor lacked the durability to make the wearer immune to cannon fire, it could partially deflect or disperse energy from low-, medium-, and high-energy blaster bolts; though the wearer may be incapacitated, survival would allow the trooper to receive advanced medical treatment that could return him to service.” From Wookiepedia.

  • As soon as I saw this I just thought this would be so cool if you put resin or some kind of semi transparent filling inbetween all those spaces and then one long bar connecting from the storm trooper to a blaster rifle as if the storm trooper is being hit by that long blast. Then light that long bar and internally to the storm trooper stuff a load of coloured lights so all the spaces where its exploded are lit up. Wouldn't that look like the storm trooper was really exploding. A moment frozen in time where the poor guy is getting blown to pieces? Just a thought. Anyway I love the idea just as it is. Very creative and really leans in to appreciating the model as a model kit.

  • This would work better on a Gundam imo. This is too organic/human like. A gundam would look better and be epic because of every moving part and cool mechanical parts! This just looks kinda plain to me.

    • To me this is how you build on creative ideas. Don't crap on what's done. Appreciate it at least for how it allowed you to think of a way to level it up to a whole new piece. Viewed that way its important even if you don't love it for what it is. I think its a brilliantly creative idea well executed and it just invites you to go down new avenues with that same concept. As you put it yourself, perhaps with a big Gundam model as you often see that exploded view of robots.

    • I get what he was going for but since there are no internal details or human figure to see, the idea falls short. Maybe it was a test to see if he can pull it off with another kit with actual internals... hopefully.
